The Ligne Roset glass-front facade forms a proscenium that heralds the store beyond for car drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike at this busy intersection in Westport. Suspended plastic colored panels act as a scrim in a theatrical composition that tints the interior space and furniture, and thus emphasizes the numerous color and fabric choices available. A yellow chair may sequentially appear orange, then red, or both colors as viewed through the facade.
The ceiling steps down from the revealed steel trusses at the street frontage to the ceiling at the rear. Groups of furniture and the control of the perceptual depth of the store are organized by ceiling and floor-height variations, by lighting and materials.
Accessories are displayed in the solid mass of cabinetry and its carved-out shelves, contrasting with the thin “skins” of the facade’s glass and plastic panels, in a composition coordinated by color, light, and geometry.
The white walls and ceilings allow for the facade and cabinetry alone to provide vibrant saturated color accents that complement the palette of Ligne Roset’s furniture. The color effects can be changed easily by replacing the plastic panels, switching the removable translucent display-wall panels, or by repainting the interiors of the carved-out shelves. This flexibility leaves room for the next year’s furniture palette. This store prototype anticipates other, future showcases for Ligne Roset furniture.
