The enormous success and widespread visibility of Donna Karan Company is due to a great product marketed through a brilliant use of advertising and design.
Stephen Alton has developed and detailed many projects for Donna Karan. Their success was due in great part to the close relationship that was formed with the Creative Services Group at DK. Donna Karan Company caused quite a stir when it introduced its new beauty line without licensing the product until much later on. Stephen Alton Architect, P.C., worked closely with the marketing, display, packaging, and all the creative services required to launch the prototype for the new product and to design some of the first display units, just as Donna Karan was about to start her DK Home line.
In the work developed for DK Intimates, the particular challenge involved an effort to accommodate DK’s “look” and the requirements of the licensing company. The design developed prototype studies and flexible-while-elegant fixture units.
The DK Collection and DKNY Men’s Store in Saudi Arabia was the first store to combine two separate lines in one hybrid design proposal. The conservative Saudi cultural context prohibits publicity for such non-traditional fashion.
