The hotel occupies a site in a densely forested national park, and slopes to a large lake. During the winter the area supports skiing nearby. In the summer the lake offers waterskiing and various other water-related activities. The program involves lobbies, a restaurant, activities rooms, guest rooms, and a gym. Views are excellent in all directions and taken advantage of fully though the orientation of the proposal for each and every room. The activities room and a large observation deck are at the water end of the “bar” building and benefit from the dramatic panoramic view of the lake. The exterior skin of the main building is marked by retractable shading devices that allow for economical summer shading. Private guest cabins are a very close walk from the main building. The cabins’ architectonic skins along the eastern edge of the site become marked by the internal structural systems. Inspiration for forms was from piles of logs found in the woods and stacked in a splayed manner. The site access and foot paths through the site accentuate the natural slope and the views.
